Topic: Hi there!

Well, howdy doody!

Tindeck's back in action after a troubling few weeks of downtime, and it's back with a vengeance.

We've spent the time offline rewriting Tindeck's codebase to make it leaner and more efficient, introduced a slew of new features, and made it harder for the baddies to host pirated material with us, all of which should mean less downtime in the future and a better site experience for everyone involved.

Here's a nearly comprehensive list of the changes:

  • significant layout redesign

  • comment system

  • ability to tag files as favourites

  • progress bar for uploads

  • site taxonomy that actually makes sense

  • hotlink protection

  • ability to upload ogg, wav, mp3, and yet-to-be-announced files (still in testing, not rolled out yet)

  • better flash streaming that actually works in firefox for a change

  • better mp3 parsing to avoid incorrect bitrate / length / file size reporting

  • list of movers and shakers

  • messaging system

  • users can delete their own files if they wish

  • file upload limit changed to 5mb (50mb for premium users)

  • automatic deletion of files that have gone over 90 days without a single download

  • free users can host up to 100 concurrent files (unlimited for premium users)

  • featured downloads

  • faster file mirrors that will be coming online shortly

  • smarter error handling

  • automated backups (still in testing, not rolled out yet)

  • social bookmarking service provided by addthis.com

  • improved image generation, also now displays a proper image if a file is missing or has been deleted

  • rss feeds for user uploads

  • proper terms and conditions, and required dmca notice

  • subscription service for those who want a few extra features and to help cover tindeck's staggering bandwidth costs

  • discussion forums

  • free orange juice for all employees

As you can see, things have been pretty busy, and we haven't had enough time to test everything to make sure it works, so we're doing this the google way: put it in beta and hope for the best.

Things will almost certainly break or be broken in the next few weeks as features are used in ways we didn't anticipate and people try and poke holes in things, but we'll try and be on top of things as quickly as possible.

If you notice any bugs, please post about it in the Bug Reports forum, or if you have a request for a new feature (or want to discuss an existing feature) post about that in the Feature Requests forum.

If you head to the forum index, you'll find a number of forums relating to music production, discussion, and review.

For non-music discussion about current events or whatever you like, head over to the General Discussion forum and have a ball.

Finally, if you're a regular user of Tindeck and you'd like to help support this place, as well as get a bunch of features in addition to the ones listed above, consider upgrading your account. It costs as little as five bucks and will help us defray the out-of-pocket expenses we incur every month to keep this place going.

Thanks, and happy listening!

Awesome Idea.
It would be so nice to implement that idea in a short period of time.

Re: Hi there!

Hello,
I found this site around a week ago and I started posting up some of my new songs immediately. I was looking around the forums and I did not encounter anyone else with the same or with a similar inquiry as the one that has been hauting and nagging at the back of my mind.
Now, I may be naive in asking this and I may be asking it in the wrong place all together, but here it goes anyways.
Does tindeck automatically update the number of downloads a song gets at a constant rate? If so, then does it update all the downloads or just a few?

I waited a few days this past weekend and noticed after two or three days, only 3 of my songs' downloads had increased and the change was not a substantial one, it was rather minimal (for one song the amount of downloads stayed the same). However, every time I would refresh the page [where the song plays] the number of downloads would steadily rise by one. I am I doing something wrong? Is it just me?

Re: Hi there!

Every time you refresh the page, the song starts streaming again, which is another download.

Re: Hi there!

Oh. Then I misunderstood, I thought downloads meant that the song was actually being downloaded and not just streamed, and listened to. Thank you for clairifying this for me.

Can tindeck show the number of times a song was downloaded (in the sense of bringing the file onto one's computer, not streamed)? I don't only want to know how many times the song had been played or streamed, but how many times it was downloaded as a file as well. This knowledge would relieve my temporary depression...

Re: Hi there!

I was wondering about that as well.
Also, I think it would be pretty cool to see how many people downloaded it as in saving it to their computer.  Would be nice to know if someone loves it enough to put it onto an mp3 player or something and listen to it regularly. tongue

Re: Hi there!

That is exactly what I mean.

Re: Hi there!

I third the idea of knowing how many times it was actually downloaded, rather than just streamed.  I do want to know how many times people have listened to it, but knowing the number of people who actually want to have the tune not only helps the ego (which we all enjoy) but can help inform where we are going "right" with our music.

I am a law student; i appreciate and like all that stuff which does not contain piracy and illegality in it. I love to hear music while studying my law books. Because I feel that law is the subject which makes you depressed some time, especially when you came to know that there are very rare in your country who are following it the way in which it should be followed.
