As far as criticism, ambient music in my opinion is completely up in the air in terms if how it should be done. Some people like listening to the ambient sounds of traffic, which is simply orchestrated in song, yet it can also be an art depending on how you use it. The question is, do you take a simple sound and make it complex or do you take a complex sound and make it simple?

It's all up to you, but I personally prefer some rhythmic notion in my ambient music as well as some very distant, almost faint melody (which in a sense you do maintain).

When I make ambient music, I just sort of let it happen, and that works the best IMO.
